Bronxville Village Area Profile

Settled by the Dutch and English in the 1600’s, this quaint and charming village continues to maintain all the character and wealth of yesteryear.  The development of the Village as we know it today started around the 1800’s by William Van Duzer Lawrence.  The first area developed by Lawrence known as the “Hilltop,” was a turn-of-the century art colony which immediately attracted well known writers and artists.  He built a large stone clubhouse, casino, tennis courts and twenty-seven uniquely designed cottages with spectacular views.

Culture:  Bronxville is an exclusive “Bedroom Community” - with its 28 minute commute to Manhattan’s Grand Central Station and its 16 mile drive from New York City - is known for its elegant properties and peaceful setting.  Its historical houses, enchanting townhomes and wide variety of co-ops and condos are carefully nestled throughout.  Winding cobblestone streets and densely wooded hills embrace the unique designs that characterize the charm and distinction of the village.  Huge white columns, mansions of brick, stucco and timber, arched windows and ornamental gates reflect the outrageous magnificence of many prestigious properties.  Superb restaurants, boutiques, fine art and antique shops delight villagers and visitors many located on the main boulevard, Pondfield Road.

Recreation:  The Town of Eastchester provides a wide variety of recreational opportunities to the public and residents of Bronxville.  Lake Isle Club offers golf, swimming and tennis and has lovely facilities for catering.  In addition there are two private clubs Siwanoy and the Bronxville Field Club.  Playgrounds, ball fields and scenic paths along the Bronx River are available for walking, hiking, biking and jogging.  The village owns several paddle ball courts and tennis courts which are available on a permit basis to residents.

Schools:  The Bronxville schools rank among the most prestigious educational systems in the Unites States.  It consists of one elementary school, one middle school and one high school.  One parochial school and two four year colleges, Concordia and Sarah Lawrence, are within the community.

Safety:  Police protection is provided by a fully staffed Village Department with headquarters located at Village Hall.  Fire protection is provided by the Town of Eastchester Fire Department.
